The school was formed by the merger of the Institute of Ecology and Resource Management, Department of Geography, Department of Geology and Geophysics, and Institute for Meteorology. It is split between the King's Buildings and the Central Area of the university. The school is ranked as one of the best in the UK for Earth Sciences. The head of the School of GeoSciences is currently Professor Bryne Ngwenya.
