The Schwarzlose Model 1898 was a full-size, locked-breech, rotary-bolt, semi-automatic pistol invented by Prussian firearm designer Andreas Wilhelm Schwarzlose.{{cite journal |last=Antaris |first=Leonardo M. |year=2017 |title=In the Beginning |journal=American Rifleman |volume=165 |issue=10 |page=80 |publisher=National Rifle Association of America }} It was chambered for cartridges such as the 7.65×25mm Borchardt and 7.63×25mm Mauser.{{cite book|last1=Hogg|first1=Ian|last2=Walter|first2=John|title=Pistols of the World|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=okQH6zFgDtUC&pg=PA279|date=29 August 2004|publisher=David & Charles|isbn=0-87349-460-1|pages=279–280}}
Most pistols used a six-shot detachable magazine, but a few were built with a larger frame for an eight-shot magazine. The rear sight was vertically adjustable, and the firing pin served as a cocking indicator by protruding to the rear. The Schwarzlose design was advanced for its time, but not widely adopted with less than 500 pieces being manufactured.{{cite book|last=Lee|first=Jerry|title=The Official Gun Digest Book of Guns & Prices 2013|date=23 April 2013|publisher=Krause Publications|location=Iola, Wisconsin|isbn=978-1-4402-3543-6|page=[https://archive.org/details/officialgundiges0000unse/page/936 936]|url-access=registration|url=https://archive.org/details/officialgundiges0000unse/page/936}}{{cite book|last=Ezell|first=Edward Clinton|title=Handguns of the World: Military Revolvers and Self-loaders from 1870 to 1945|year=1993|publisher=Marboro Books|isbn=978-0-88029-618-2|pages=150–153}}
Small lots were sold to the Boers during the Boer War. Another lot was sold to members of the Russian Social-Democratic Party who were plotting insurrection, but were confiscated at the Russian border and issued to the Imperial Russian Frontier Guards.{{cite book|last=Hammerfell|first=Richard|title=Firearms Illustrated - Pistol Edition|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=zXH_BgAAQBAJ&pg=PA213|year=2015|publisher=Digital Services|page=213|id=GGKEY:PKJGL3K97WH}}
