Since its launch, three additional channels have been launched under the SciShow brand: SciShow Space, SciShow Psych, and SciShow Kids.
History and funding
The channel was launched as an "original channel", which meant that YouTube funded the channel.{{cite web|url=http://www.marketwired.com/press-release/vlogbrother-hank-green-launches-science-channel-as-one-youtubes-much-publicized-original-1602880.htm|title=Vlogbrother Hank Green Launches Science Channel as One of YouTube's Much-Publicized Original Programming Channels|publisher=West Corporation|website=Marketwired|date=January 3, 2012|accessdate=October 25, 2014}}{{cite web|last=Hale|first=Mike|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/25/arts/television/youtubes-original-channels-take-on-tv.html|title=Genres Stretch, for Better and Worse, as YouTube Takes On TV|website=The New York Times|date=April 25, 2012|accessdate=October 25, 2014}} The show's initial grant was projected to expire in 2014, and in response, on September 12, 2013, SciShow joined the viewer-funding site Subbable, created in part by Green.{{cite web|last=Green|first=Hank|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GE10lpp8O0|title=SciShow Needs You!|publisher=YouTube|work=SciShow|date=September 12, 2013|accessdate=October 17, 2013}}{{cite web|last=Eifler|first=Emily|url=http://www.kqed.org/arts/multimedia/article.jsp?essid=124879|title=Crowdfunding Matures with a Lesson from Public Broadcasting|publisher=KQED Inc.|website=KQED.org|date=August 20, 2013|accessdate=December 6, 2013}}
In 2014, the channel landed a national advertisement deal with YouTube. The educational program was featured on platforms such as billboards and television commercials as a result.{{cite web|last=DeSimone|first=Evan|url=http://newmediarockstars.com/2014/10/hank-green-will-soon-be-stalking-you-with-science/|title=Hank Green Will Soon Be Stalking You With Science|publisher=New Media Rockstars|website=NewMediaRockstars.com|date=October 16, 2014|accessdate=October 25, 2014}} Green details that the advertisements had a positive effect on SciShow, stating, "My Twitter exploded, our followers and subscribers exploded."
After Patreon acquired Subbable, the channel switched over to Patreon where it continues to receive support in exchange for various perks. SciShow currently has over four thousand patrons.{{Cite news|url=https://www.patreon.com/scishow|title=SciShow is creating YouTube Videos about Science {{!}} Patreon|work=Patreon|access-date=March 11, 2017|language=en}}
