History

The first settlement developed around the ferruginous healing spring Rothenbrunn, which was used by Innsbruck nobles and citizens since the Middle Ages. The place name is first mentioned in a document dated 1271 as Selrain. The origin of the name is disputed. It may be based on the ancient field name *selia ('Sennhütte'). In any case, the name is pre-Roman.{{Cite book |last1=Anreiter |first1=Peter |last2=Chapman |first2=Christian |last3=Rampl |first3=Gerhard |url=https://www.worldcat.org/oclc/455592524 |title=Die Gemeindenamen Tirols Herkunft und Bedeutung |year=2009 |isbn=978-3-7030-0449-0 |publisher=Wagner |location=Innsbruck |oclc=455592524}}
