On July 3, 2018, a man from Arviat was killed in a rare polar bear attack on the island. The man was on the island with his children when the polar bear approached them and attacked, killing 31-year-old Aaron Gibbons. The bear was killed by two others who were also in the area.{{cite news|url=https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/polar-bear-attack-arviat-1.4733550|title=Man killed in polar bear attack 'died a hero,' says cousin| work=CBC News | date=July 4, 2018}}{{cite news|url=https://bnonews.com/index.php/2018/07/canadian-man-killed-in-rare-polar-bear-attack/ |title=Canadian man killed in rare polar bear attack| work=BNO News | date=July 4, 2018}}
