Seq24 is a software MIDI music sequencer that runs under Linux and Microsoft Windows. Written in C++,{{cite web|url=https://www.linuxlinks.com/seq24/|title=Seq24 – minimal loop based midi sequencer|work=LinuxLinks|accessdate=29 November 2020}} it is designed to be simple to use and appropriate for live performance.{{cite web|url=http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/8304|title=At the Sounding Edge: Introducing seq24|work=Linux Journal|first=Dave|last=Phillips|date=12 May 2005|accessdate=28 November 2020}}

Distributed under the terms of the GPL-2.0-or-later license,{{cite web|url=https://launchpad.net/seq24|title=Seq24|work=Launchpad|date=9 May 2008 |accessdate=29 November 2020}} Seq24 is free software.{{ cite web | url = http://filter24.org/seq24/SEQ24 | title = Seq24 description file in tarball | quote = Released under the Terms of the GPL }}

Seq24 is intended to be similar to hardware sequencers/samplers such as Akai's MPC line of instruments. It works by sequencing smaller sequences or loops of MIDI notes and performance information into larger music sequences in a manner similar to the way in which Sony's Acid software is used to sequence audio clips. In order to do this, it has a patterns panel, a pattern editor and a song editor. Sequences are saved as Standard MIDI file format, type 1.{{cite web|url=https://www.soundonsound.com/sound-advice/pc-freeware-sequencers-editors|title=PC Freeware Sequencers & Editors|work=Sound On Sound|first=Martin|last=Walker|date=September 2007|accessdate=29 November 2020}}

While developed from 2002 to 2006 by Rob Buse, a team (calling themselves simply 'Seq24team') picked up the project in 2008 with Rob's blessing, and resumed work with release 0.8.8.

Forks

Several follow-up forks and reworks of the original tool exist, listed below:

  • [https://github.com/Stazed/seq42 seq42], oriented on song editing, rather than live performance. Original version is no longer maintained.
  • [https://github.com/ahlstromcj/sequencer64 sequencer64], seq24 heart with 6 years of extensions.
  • [https://github.com/ahlstromcj/seq66 seq66], a major refactoring with pattern banks, playlists, piano roll, song layout, MIDI control/status for live performance etc., Qt based.
  • [https://github.com/jean-emmanuel/seq192 seq192], "with less features but more swag".
