She broadcast on BBC radio and television, and wrote for the Christian Science Monitor.

Serena Dunn Kamper was born in Santa Barbara, California to Margaret (Dunn) and Gustav Kamper{{Cite web|title=Serena Dunn Lesley Obituary (1926 - 2016) The Oregonian|url=https://obits.oregonlive.com/us/obituaries/oregon/name/serena-lesley-obituary?id=21470953|access-date=2021-10-21|website=Legacy.com}} and lived there during her childhood. Lesley was raised in the Christian Science faith. She attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts and graduated from Principia College in Illinois, a private college for Christian Scientists.
