While other communities were struggling to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, Serrana participated in a study wherein 100% of its adult population was supposed to be vaccinated with CoronaVac. Prior to the mass vaccination, 5% of Serrana's population had been infected, one of the highest rates in Brazil.{{cite news |last1=Jeantet |first1=Diane |title=Vaccination of whole Brazilian city spares it from shortages |url=https://apnews.com/article/brazil-rio-de-janeiro-eduardo-paes-coronavirus-pandemic-4234f4641df47456d96eea03e78421aa |access-date=February 19, 2021 |work=AP NEWS |date=17 February 2021}}

Most adults received two shots by the end of April. By May, symptomatic COVID-19 cases fell 80%, hospitalizations by 86%, and mortality by 95% according to researchers doing the study. The virus was contained once 75% of people were vaccinated. According to Ricardo Palacios, a director at São Paulo's Instituto Butantan, "The most important result was understanding that we can control the pandemic even without vaccinating the entire population."{{Cite web|date=2021-05-31|title=Mass vaccination creates healthy oasis in Brazilian city|url=https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/mass-vaccination-creates-healthy-oasis-brazilian-city-2021-05-31/|access-date=2021-06-02|website=Reuters}}{{Cite web|date=2021-06-01|title=Sinovac vaccine restores a Brazilian city to near normal|url=https://apnews.com/article/caribbean-brazil-coronavirus-pandemic-business-health-20bd94d28ac7b373d7a8f3f9c557e5b6|access-date=2021-06-02|website=Associated Press}}
