Events during mayor tenure
In 2017, white nationalists groups that rallied Saturday in Shelbyville, Tennessee, were met by a large police presence and dozens of shouting counterprotesters. Hours later, a second rally planned in nearby Murfreesboro was canceled. Shane McFarland denounced the rallies.{{Cite web |last=DeGennaro |first=Nancy |title=Mayor's #WeAreMurfreesboro video denounces White Lives Matter rally |url=https://www.dnj.com/story/news/2017/10/23/mayors-wearemurfreesboro-video-denounces-white-lives-matter-rally/790103001/ |access-date=2024-03-05 |website=The Daily News Journal |language=en-US}}{{Cite web |last=Levenson |first=Eric |date=2017-10-28 |title=White nationalists cancel second rally in Tennessee |url=https://www.cnn.com/2017/10/28/us/tennessee-white-nationalist-rally-shelbyville-murfreesboro/index.html |access-date=2024-03-05 |website=CNN |language=en}}
In June, 2023, the Murfreesboro city council enacted an ordinance outlawing “indecent exposure, public indecency, lewd behavior, nudity or sexual conduct”. A reference within the ordinance to an element of the city code that categorized homosexuality as an act of indecent sexual conduct, meant that this change effectively banned homosexual activity.{{Cite web |last=Reed |first=Erin |title=City Ordinance Banning Public Homosexuality Reaches Rutherford County Libraries |url=https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/city-ordinance-banning-public-homosexuality |access-date=2023-11-27 |website=www.erininthemorning.com |language=en}} The ordinance was used to deny support for local Pride events and remove books with LGBT+ content from the town library.{{Cite web |last=Reed |first=Erin |title=City Ordinance Banning Public Homosexuality Reaches Rutherford County Libraries |url=https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/city-ordinance-banning-public-homosexuality |access-date=2023-11-27 |website=www.erininthemorning.com |language=en}} Following a First Amendment lawsuit from the ACLU and BoroPride, Murfreesboro city council voted unanimously to modify the ordinance to remove reference to homosexuality on Oct. 19, 2023.{{Cite web |title=The Daily News Journal Subscription Offers, Specials, and Discounts |url=https://subscribe.dnj.com/restricted |access-date=2023-11-27 |website=subscribe.dnj.com}}{{Cite web |title=The Daily News Journal |url=https://www.dnj.com/restricted/?return=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dnj.com%2Fstory%2Fnews%2F2023%2F11%2F16%2Fboropride-aclu-wins-effort-remove-homosexuality-murfreesboro-city-code%2F71607166007%2F |access-date=2023-11-27 |website=www.dnj.com}}{{Cite web |title=The Daily News Journal |url=https://www.dnj.com/restricted/?return=https://www.dnj.com/story/news/2023/11/16/boropride-aclu-wins-effort-remove-homosexuality-murfreesboro-city-code/71607166007/ |access-date=2024-03-05 |website=www.dnj.com}}
