Controversy

The Shanghai Major was plagued from the start with technical difficulties and both the production company and host, James "2GD" Harding, were publicly fired on the second day by Gabe Newell in a Reddit post.{{cite web|url=https://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/47sc46/update_from_the_shanghai_major/|title=Update from the Shanghai Major|website=reddit.com|date=27 February 2016 }}{{cite web|url=http://steamed.kotaku.com/valves-shanghai-dota-2-competition-continues-to-be-a-di-1762721163|title=Valve's Shanghai DOTA 2 Tournament Continues To Be A Disaster|first=Nathan|last=Grayson|website=kotaku.com|access-date=2016-03-05|archive-date=2016-03-05|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160305115041/http://steamed.kotaku.com/valves-shanghai-dota-2-competition-continues-to-be-a-di-1762721163|url-status=dead}}{{cite web|url=https://www.theverge.com/2016/2/27/11126040/dota-2-gabe-newell-james-harding-shanghai-major-fired|title=Gabe Newell publicly fires Dota 2 presenter amid tournament troubles|first=Vlad|last=Savov|website=theverge.com|date=27 February 2016}} Despite this, the tournament continued to experience production issues and unexpected delays, as well as less than favorable conditions for the players and broadcasters.{{cite web|url=https://www.sbnation.com/2016/3/2/11145404/shanghai-major-problems-dota-esports-lost-keyboard-soundproof-booths-problems|title=A lost keyboard and 'a big s***show' have derailed Dota's Shanghai major|first=James|last=Dator|website=sbnation.com|date=2 March 2016}}

Even after the event finished, controversy persisted. The hotel rooms the teams had stayed in were cleaned out, with a total of 40-50 personal belongings being lost or misplaced, including mice, keyboards, headsets, and car keys.{{Cite web|url=http://www.dailydot.com/esports/player-devices-missing-shanghai-major/|title=Shanghai Major problems continue even after tournament finishes|website=The Daily Dot|access-date=2016-03-09|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160309151435/http://www.dailydot.com/esports/player-devices-missing-shanghai-major/|archivedate=2016-03-09}}
