Sharya ({{langx|ru|Шарья́}}) is a town in Kostroma Oblast, Russia, located on the left bank of the Vetluga River, {{convert|330|km|sp=us}} northeast of Kostroma, the administrative center of the oblast.
Population: {{ru-census|p2021=20439|p2010=23,681|;}} {{ru-census2002|24,900|;}} {{su-census1989|27,062|;}} 26,000 (1974).
History
It was founded in 1906 and granted town status in 1938.{{citation needed|date=February 2012}}
Administrative and municipal status
Within the framework of administrative divisions, Sharya serves as the administrative center of Sharyinsky District,Law #112-4-ZKO despite not being part of it.Resolution #133-a As an administrative division, it is, together with the urban-type settlement of Vetluzhsky and three rural localities,The village of Kostino under the administrative jurisdiction of Sharya was abolished by Resolution #586 of October 6, 2004. This Resolution was abrogated by Resolution #359 of August 17, 2007; however, the village had not been reinstated, nor is it included into the Registry of Inhabited Localities of Kostroma Oblast. incorporated separately as the town of oblast significance of Sharya—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts. As a municipal division, the town of oblast significance of Sharya is incorporated as Sharya Urban Okrug.Law #237-ZKO
