The song, written by Bryan Potvin, describes the singer's infatuation with a physically attractive woman and his dismay at learning that she is a horrible person—a "model from Hell". The song was inspired by an episode of Rhoda in which a character says "I'm not really beautiful, I just look that way."{{cite web|url=https://amplify.nmc.ca/origin-stories-bryan-potvin-on-the-northern-pikes-she-aint-pretty/|title=Origin Stories––Bryan Potvin on the Northern Pikes' "She Ain't Pretty"|last=Jagger|first=Juliette|date=5 February 2018|work=National Music Centre|accessdate=11 October 2018}}
