After graduation, she worked on her script writing by taking part in a writer's masterclasses.
In 2018, Munyiva played Ziki, a free spirit who feels conflicted and torn between love and security, in Rafiki. The story is based on the novel Jambula Tree by the Ugandan writer Monica Arac de Nyeko and details the love that develops between two young women where homosexuality is forbidden. Even though she impressed director Wanuri Kahiu at the audition with her love of life, Munyiva was hesitant to take the role until a queer friend convinced her of its importance. The film was outlawed in Kenya, where homosexuality is illegal. Rafiki became the first Kenyan film to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival.{{cite news |last1=Darling |first1=Cary |title=Kenyan gay life comes into focus in ‘Rafiki’ |url=https://www.houstonchronicle.com/entertainment/movies_tv/article/Kenyan-gay-life-comes-into-focus-in-Rafiki-13829398.php |accessdate=8 November 2020 |work=Houston Chronicle |date=9 May 2019}} Munyiva was featured on the Vogue UK edition for the best beauty looks and make up shoot at Cannes.{{cite news |last1=Mangat |first1=Rupi |title=Behind the scenes of ‘Rafiki’ at Cannes |url=https://www.theeastafrican.co.ke/magazine/Behind-the-scenes-of-Rafiki-at-Cannes/434746-4580450-y0ahon/index.html |accessdate=October 7, 2020 |work=The East African |date=May 25, 2018}} Ann Hornaday of The Washington Post praised the "endearing, unforced chemistry" of Munyiva and co-star Samantha Mugatsia.{{cite news |last1=Hornaday |first1=Ann |title=Movie about teenage girls in love is a breakthrough for Kenyan filmmaker |url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/goingoutguide/movies/movie-about-teenage-girls-in-love-is-a-breakthrough-for-kenyan-filmmaker/2019/05/06/a910b1e4-6c5d-11e9-be3a-33217240a539_story.html |accessdate=8 November 2020 |work=The Washington Post |date=6 May 2019}} Munyiva was nominated for best actress at the Africa Movie Academy Awards.{{cite web |last1=Dia |first1=Thierno |title=AMAA 2019, the nominees |url=http://africine.org/analyse/amaa-2019-the-nominees/14762 |website=Africine |accessdate=8 November 2020 |date=19 September 2019}}
