History
A post office called Shell Bluff was established in 1889, and remained in operation until 1913.{{cite web | url=https://www.postalhistory.com/postoffices.asp?state=GA | title=Post Offices | publisher=Jim Forte Postal History | accessdate=3 June 2019}} The community was named for a nearby fossil bed on the Savannah River.{{cite book | url=http://www.kenkrakow.com/gpn/s.pdf| title=Georgia Place-Names: Their History and Origins | publisher=Winship Press | author=Krakow, Kenneth K. | year=1975 | location=Macon, GA | pages=204 | isbn=0-915430-00-2}} The Vogtle Electric Generating Plant is located near the area.
