History

Gnowangerup was initially gazetted as the Gnowangerup Road District on 26 January 1912, taking in territory that had been part of the Broomehill and Tambellup road districts. On 23 June 1961, it became a shire following the passage of the Local Government Act 1960, which reformed all remaining road districts into shires. On 4 June 1982, the eastern half of the Gnowangerup shire was excised to form the Shire of Jerramungup.{{cite web |url=http://www.boundaries.wa.gov.au/Documents/pdf/Final_MBAR_Publication.pdf |title=Municipality Index |work=Municipality Boundary Amendments Register |publisher=WA Electoral Commission |date=31 May 2003 |access-date=12 June 2014 }}

Since 2007, when the ward system was discontinued, all councillors have been elected at large from the Gnowangerup district.{{cite web |url=http://www.slp.wa.gov.au/gazette/gg.nsf/SearchAll/0154A50C3AD52DDBC82572B300157744?openDocument |title=Shire of Gnowangerup (Discontinuation of Ward System) Order 2007 |author=Ljiljanna Ravlich, Minister for Local Government |work=Government Gazette |publisher=Government of Western Australia State Law Publisher |date=5 April 2007 |access-date=12 June 2014 }}
