The Shire of Wagin is a local government area in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, about {{convert|230|km|mi|0}} southeast of the state capital, Perth. The Shire covers an area of about {{convert|1948|km2|sqmi|0}}, and its seat of government is the town of Wagin.

History

It was first established as the Arthur Road District on 10 February 1887. It was renamed the Wagin Road District on 10 February 1905.{{cite web | url=http://www.boundaries.wa.gov.au/sites/default/files/content/documents//2003_municipal_boundary_amendments_register.pdf | title=Municipality Boundary Amendments Register | publisher=Western Australian Electoral Distribution Commission | access-date=11 January 2020}}

The Wagin township was severed from the road district as the Municipality of Wagin on 27 July 1906,{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article257809419 |title=Municipality of Wagin |newspaper=The Wagin Argus And Arthur, Dumbleyung, Lake Grace Express |volume=XXVII |issue=1679 |location=Western Australia |date=16 December 1937 |accessdate=25 April 2021 |page=19 |via=National Library of Australia}} but was amalgamated back into the road district on 15 April 1961, with the creation of a new Town Ward.

It was declared a shire and named the Shire of Wagin with effect from 1 July 1961 following the passage of the Local Government Act 1960, which reformed all remaining road districts into shires.

Wards

The shire was divided into wards until 1991, but wards were abolished and councillors now sit at large. {{As of|2014}} there were 11 councillors.
