The Shire of Yea was a local government area about {{convert|110|km|mi|0}} northeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of {{convert|1392.32|km2|sqmi|1}}, and existed from 1869 until 1994. The shire's population was dominated by the town of Yea.

History

Yea was first incorporated as a road district on 1 February 1869, and became a shire on 28 November 1873.

Its boundaries changed a number of times throughout its existence:{{cite book|title=Victorian Municipal Directory|year=1992|publisher=Arnall & Jackson|location=Brunswick|pages=908–909}} Accessed at State Library of Victoria, La Trobe Reading Room.

The Shire was described in the 1949 Australian Blue Book as an elevated area given to pastoral and dairying pursuits, along with sheep and cattle grazing. By 1994, 51% of Yea's land was under cultivation as farmland, with the Kinglake National Park and Yea River Regional Park, as well as the Murrindindi Forest, the latter being important to Yea's economy for timber production, accounting for much of the rest.{{cite web|url=http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/ncas/multimedia/gazetteer/list/yea.html|title=Australian Places - Yea|author=Monash University|author-link=Monash University|year=1999|accessdate=2008-01-05|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20030318072205/http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/ncas/multimedia/gazetteer/list/yea.html|archivedate=2003-03-18}}

On 18 November 1994, the Shire of Yea was abolished, and along with the Shire of Alexandra and parts of the City of Whittlesea and the Shires of Broadford, Eltham, Euroa and Healesville, was merged into the newly created Shire of Murrindindi.{{cite book|url=http://www.ausstats.abs.gov.au/ausstats/free.nsf/0/76E601D6DB55E88ACA25722500049195/$File/12570_1994-95.pdf|title=Victorian local government amalgamations 1994-1995: Changes to the Australian Standard Geographical Classification|author=Australian Bureau of Statistics|author-link=Australian Bureau of Statistics|date=1 August 1995|publisher=Commonwealth of Australia|page=10|isbn=0-642-23117-6|accessdate=2007-12-16}}
