Biography
Tate was born in March 1956 in Spanish Town and raised in Sligoville, Saint Catherine Parish, Jamaica.{{Cite web|date=27 April 2017|title=Interview with Shirley Tate|url=https://www.timeshighereducation.com/people/interview-shirley-tate-leeds-beckett-university|access-date=2021-06-12|website=Times Higher Education (THE)|language=en}} She received a PhD in sociology from Lancaster University in 2000;{{Cite book|last1=Ahmed|first1=Sara|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=-AGDAgAAQBAJ|title=Thinking Through the Skin|last2=Stacey|first2=Jackie|date=2 September 2003|publisher=Routledge|isbn=978-1-134-59398-9|pages=10|language=en}} and had studied at University of York where she received a M.A. degree in linguistics and M.Phil. degree in communication studies.
