Controversy and criticism
The series was controversial prior to airing, due to star Alex Kompothecras being a friend of four Florida men who engaged in a viral act of animal cruelty by dragging a live shark behind a boat. Kompothecras was caught on camera shooting a shark, and also had uploaded racist posts to Instagram.{{Cite news|url=https://www.cbsnews.com/news/investigation-into-shark-abuse-videos/|title=Investigation launched after new shark abuse video emerges|access-date=March 15, 2018|language=en|archive-date=March 7, 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180307214218/https://www.cbsnews.com/news/investigation-into-shark-abuse-videos/|url-status=live}}{{Cite news|url=https://www.orlandoweekly.com/Blogs/archives/2017/08/04/the-deleted-instagram-posts-from-the-cast-of-mtvs-siesta-key-are-somehow-worse-than-the-show|title=The deleted Instagram posts from the cast of MTV's 'Siesta Key' are somehow worse than the show|last=Wolf|first=Colin|work=Orlando Weekly|access-date=March 15, 2018|language=en|archive-date=March 16, 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180316024035/https://www.orlandoweekly.com/Blogs/archives/2017/08/04/the-deleted-instagram-posts-from-the-cast-of-mtvs-siesta-key-are-somehow-worse-than-the-show|url-status=dead}} The premiere party was cancelled after death threats were made against the cast.{{Cite news|url=http://people.com/tv/siesta-key-death-threats/|title=Premiere Party for MTV's Siesta Key Canceled After Alleged Death Threats|work=PEOPLE.com|access-date=March 15, 2018|language=en|archive-date=March 16, 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180316023747/http://people.com/tv/siesta-key-death-threats/|url-status=live}}
