He played for several Italian clubs throughout his career, before coming to prominence with Palermo. At international level, he was part of the Italian side that won the 2006 FIFA World Cup, and represented the national side on 16 occasions between 2004 and 2006, scoring once.

Club career

Barone started his career making his first team debut on 4 May 1997 for Parma, against Atalanta. He then played for Padova of Serie C1 in 1998, Alzano Virescit of Serie B in 1999.

In summer 2000, he joined Chievo in a co-ownership deal, where he played for 2 seasons. He was loaned back to Parma in the 2002–03 season, then bought back permanently in 2003, with Amauri moved to Chievo.

On 16 July 2004, he transferred to Palermo for €5M. He signed a 4-year contract.{{cite news|url=http://www.ilpalermocalcio.it/it/0405/news_scheda.jsp?id=1835|title=SIMONE BARONE E' DEL PALERMO|date=16 July 2004|accessdate=12 June 2010|work=US Città di Palermo|publisher=ilpalermocalcio.it|language=Italian}} He was the regular of the team, and the team qualified for 2006–07 UEFA Cup (after the Calciopoli trials).

Style of play

A versatile, consistent, energetic, and hard-working player, Barone was primarily deployed as a central or right sided midfielder, although he was capable of playing in any midfield position, and was also deployed as a defensive midfielder, due to his stamina, tactical intelligence, positional sense, and decision-making, as well as his ability to break down opposition plays and subsequently start attacking moves with his passing.{{cite web|url=http://www.storiedicalcio.altervista.org/mondiali_calcio_2006_pagelle.html|title=2006: Italia - Capitolo IX: Le Pagelle dei Campioni del Mondo|publisher=Storie di Calcio|language=Italian|accessdate=19 December 2015}}{{cite web|url=http://www.sportcafe24.com/25419/prima-pagina/non-dimenticatevi-di-noi-le-storie-di-zambrotta-e-barone.html|title=Non dimenticatevi di noi: le storie di Gianluca Zambrotta e Simone Barone!|publisher=Sport Cafe 24.com|language=Italian|author1=Giovanni Nole|date=5 September 2012|accessdate=19 December 2015}}{{cite web|url=http://it.eurosport.com/calcio/mondiali/2006/cuore-e-polmoni_sto869989/story.shtml|title=Cuore e polmoni|date=18 April 2006 |publisher=Eurosport.com|language=Italian|accessdate=5 February 2017}}{{cite web |url=http://iltirreno.gelocal.it/speciale/mondiali-2014/2013/12/13/news/simone-barone-ci-racconta-il-trionfo-mondiale-del-2006-ci-guardammo-negli-occhi-era-il-nostro-giorno-1.8292824 |title=2006: Barone e il trionfo mondiale |language=Italian |author1=Alessandro Bernini |work=il Tirreno |date=13 December 2013 |accessdate=29 September 2018 }}{{cite web |url=https://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Serie-A/Chievo/storie/15-04-2019/chievo-ciao-seriea-serieb-top-undici-gialloblu/barone-interno.shtml |title=Chievo, ciao Serie A.
