Critics gave differing opinions on the music and lyrics of Smile & Wave. When reviewing the album's music, the Calgary Herald said the album went for the "rock jugular from start to finish",{{cite news|last1=Muretich|first1=James|title=New Releases |work=Calgary Herald|date=11 May 1997|page=C2}} though the Toronto Star called the Headstones' work "a murky, steaming cauldron of pungent rock 'n' roll".{{cite news|last1=Punter|first1=Jennie|title=Treble charger takes off on its own tracks |work=Toronto Star|date=3 May 1997|page=K2}}
Alternatively, reviewers gave mixed reviews for Hugh Dillon's performance. The Edmonton Journal said Dillon's personality was better than his singing,{{cite news|last1=Ohler|first1=Shawn|title=Treble Charger's juice precious and powerful; Toronto band cops its cues from sundry popsters; QUICK CUTS|work=Edmonton Journal|date=10 May 1997|page=D3}} while the Ottawa Journal felt that Dillion's sarcastic lyrics were almost too much for the album.{{cite news|last1=Blanchfield |first1=Mike|title=Soundtracks |work=The Ottawa Citizen|date=17 May 1997|page=7}}
