History

{{expand section|date=October 2023}}

During the 1969-1970 school year, Smithville ISD gave three black students to an all-African American school district, Jeddo Common School District, which meant that the Jeddo district continued to exist. Without the student transfer, it would not have received enough students to get funding for its teacher. A legal document in Texas cited this as a case of de facto segregation.{{cite web|url=https://tarltonapps.law.utexas.edu/exhibits/ww_justice/documents_2/Texas_opinion_1_1970.pdf|title=United States District Court, E.D. Texas, Marshall Division. UNITED STATES of America v. STATE OF TEXAS, Texas Education Agency, Dr. J. W. Edgar, Commissioner of Education, Cason Independent School District, et al. Civ. A. No. 1424.
