A total solar eclipse occurred at the Moon's ascending node of orbit on Thursday, October 12, 1939,{{cite web|title=October 12, 1939 Total Solar Eclipse|url=https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/solar/1939-october-12|publisher=timeanddate|access-date=3 August 2024}} with a magnitude of 1.0266. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partly obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's apparent diameter is larger than the Sun's, blocking all direct sunlight, turning day into darkness. Totality occurs in a narrow path across Earth's surface, with the partial solar eclipse visible over a surrounding region thousands of kilometres wide. Totality was visible for a part of Antarctica. A partial eclipse was visible for parts of Eastern Australia, Oceania, extreme southern South America, and Antarctica.

Eclipse season

This eclipse is part of an eclipse season, a period, roughly every six months, when eclipses occur.
