Description
It was released as the Android version of the Sony Vaio P who also had a wide screen.{{Cite web|title=Doubling down: How dual-screen devices have unfolded over the years|url=https://www.zdnet.com/pictures/doubling-down-how-dual-screen-devices-have-unfolded/3/|access-date=2022-02-22|website=ZDNet|language=en}}
It has two {{convert|5.5|in|mm|adj=on}} touchscreen interoperating displays joined in a hinged clamshell layout, resembling the VAIO P series.{{cite web |url=http://trendytablets.com/2011/06/13/sony-s2-review/ |title=Sony S2 Review |first=Chris |last=Stewart |date=13 June 2011 |work=TrendyTablets}} It was released in November 2011, as the second available member of the Sony Tablet series. The suggested retail price is $599.
While the unique clamshell design allowed the device to fold in half and fit into a pocket, this feature resulted in the screen being split in half by a large, black hinge, which made playing games and reading awkward and is cited as the Tablet P's most serious flaw. The Tablet P was discontinued in North America by the end of 2012 and received its final software update to Android 4.0.4 shortly after.{{Cite web|last=Savov|first=Vlad|date=2012-01-24|title=Sony Tablet S and Tablet P to be updated to Android 4.0 in spring, alongside Xperia phones|url=https://www.theverge.com/2012/1/24/2729508/sony-tablet-android-4-upgrade-spring|access-date=2022-02-22|website=The Verge|language=en}}
Reception
The Verge praised the innovative design but noted that third-party apps not optimized for the dual screens offered a poor experience.{{Cite web |last=Pierce |first=David |date=2012-03-06 |title=Sony Tablet P review |url=https://www.theverge.com/2012/3/6/2847197/sony-tablet-p-review |access-date=2025-05-26 |website=The Verge |language=en-US}} It was retrospectively called a flopped product.{{Cite web |date=2021-06-27 |title=Did you know: Sony once sold a Nintendo DS-style Android tablet |url=https://www.androidauthority.com/sony-tablet-p-1237433/ |access-date=2025-05-26 |website=Android Authority |language=en}}
