=Software=

The Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact (along with the larger XZ1) was the first Android smartphone to launch with Android 8.0 Oreo already installed.{{cite web|author1=Florin T.|title=Sony Xperia XZ1 launches in US as the first phone to run Android Oreo out of the box|url=https://www.phonearena.com/news/Sony-Xperia-XZ1-US-price-release_id98208|website=PhoneArena|access-date=29 September 2017|date=19 September 2017}}

Updating to Android 9 was made available via OTA in January 2019. As with the larger XZ1, it introduced a 3D scanning feature developed by Sony.{{Cite web|title=Sony launches Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact with 3D-scanning function|url=https://www.dpreview.com/news/1630172301/sony-launches-xperia-xz1-and-xz1-compact-with-3d-scanning-function|access-date=2021-02-09|website=DPReview}}

Reception

The Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact received mostly positive reception. Reviewers liked a return of a top-end processor and waterproof body compared to the Sony Xperia X Compact, as well as its display and battery life. However one criticism (along with the full size XZ1) was its outdated design and thick bezels, which TechnoBuffalo called "awkwardly stand out in 2017 as they would in 2012", and its high price was also criticized.{{Cite web|date=2017-10-24|title=Xperia XZ1 & XZ1 Compact review: Sony's best ever?|url=https://www.technobuffalo.com/sony-xperia-xz1-and-compact-review|access-date=2021-02-09|website=TechnoBuffalo}}{{Cite web|title=Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact review: Size doesn't matter, and the price shrinks|url=https://www.expertreviews.co.uk/go/1406320|access-date=2021-02-09|website=Expert Reviews|date=12 November 2018 |language=en}}{{Cite web|title=Sony Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact Review|url=http://www.notebookreview.com/review/sony-xperia-xz1-xperia-xz1-compact-review/|access-date=2021-02-09|website=www.notebookreview.com}} Its main competitor was the first-generation iPhone SE, the only other small sized smartphone at the time.{{Cite web|title=I really wanted to like Sony's Xperia XZ1 Compact|url=https://www.engadget.com/2018-01-24-sony-xperia-xz1-compact-impressions.html|access-date=2021-02-09|website=Engadget|language=en-US}}

It was succeeded by the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact, which featured a new smooth curved design and a larger 5.0 inch display.
