Traditionally, the street is one of the main centres of banking and financial services in the area,{{cite web | url = http://www.corkpastandpresent.ie/mapsimages/corkphotographs/corkcameraclubhistoricalphotos/grandparadeandsouthmall/ | publisher = Cork City Library | work = Cork Past and Present | title = Grand Parade and South Mall | access-date = 28 December 2016 }} and also home to a number of legal offices and solicitors.{{cite web| url = http://filmincork.com/location/the-south-mall/ | publisher = Filmincork.com | title = Filming Locations > The South Mall | access-date = 28 December 2016 }}
Among the notable buildings on the street is the branch of AIB. This started on its current site as Provincial Bank in 1825, while the current building was constructed between 1863 and 1865.{{cite web|url=http://www.cork-guide.ie/cork_city/southmall.html |title=THE SOUTH MALL CORK CITY |publisher=Cork Guide |access-date=28 August 2012 }} As the street was once a channel of the river, some original 18th century buildings retain evidence of street-level boat houses, while others are built with bricks that were once used as ballast in visiting vessels.
