Southfield College was founded as Loreto College in Darjeeling in August 1961 as a women's college.{{cite web | url=http://www.southfieldcollege.org/A%20Brief%20History.html | title=Southfield college brief history | accessdate=12 May 2012}} At the request of the government of West Bengal, the Irish Branch of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Darjeeling Loreto Educational Society agreed to take care of its management. However, due to the lack of personnel, the Loreto nuns were compelled to hand over the college to the government of West Bengal, hence to be run as Southfield College.{{cite web | url=http://www.telegraphindia.com/1080617/jsp/siliguri/story_9419877.jsp | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304133342/http://www.telegraphindia.com/1080617/jsp/siliguri/story_9419877.jsp | url-status=dead | archive-date=4 March 2016 | title=Loreto College is Southfield - Teachers hope legacy will continue | publisher=The Telegraph | date=17 June 2008 | accessdate=12 May 2012}}
