Space Pirate Trainer is a Virtual Reality (VR) first-person shooter developed and produced by I-Illusions. It was one of the earliest wave shooters utilizing the VR game-play environment. The game was released alongside the HTC Vive and featured in VR arcades. In 2018, it was also released digitally through the PlayStation Store.{{Cite web|url=http://localhost:3000/en-us/product/UP4528-CUSA12885_00-SPTRELEASE000100|title=Space Pirate Trainer|website=PlayStation™Store|access-date=2020-01-15}}
Gameplay
The game places the player on a platform in space while waves of robots come down and attack. The player has a choice between a pistol, shotgun, laser, machine gun, grenade launcher and laser sword to fight off the robots.{{Cite web|url=https://www.pocket-lint.com/ar-vr/reviews/142295-space-pirate-trainer-review-a-fantastically-exhausting-vr-shooting-gallery|title=Space Pirate Trainer review: A fantastically exhausting VR shooting gallery|last=Willings|first=Adrian|date=October 28, 2017|website=Pocket-lint|access-date=December 20, 2019}}
Development
The game was developed by Dirk Van Welden, inspired by his love for the eighties arcade aesthetic.{{Cite web|url=https://medium.com/windows-developer/eighties-game-nostalgia-leads-to-big-future-in-development-bc41378fd6a2|title=Eighties game nostalgia leads to big future in development|last=Developer|first=Windows|date=2018-05-30|website=Medium|language=en|access-date=2019-12-28}} Welden was skeptical of developing a game for VR since in past experiences he had experienced severe nausea using the platform. Once motion tracking had improved Welden developed a demo for a game and posted on a forum. He was then contacted by Valve and told that he should work on a fully-fledged game.
