Spetsnaz (named for the Russian word for "Special Forces") is an EBM duo, formed in Örebro, Sweden by Stefan Nilsson and Pontus Stålberg in 2001.
Inspired by pioneering artists such as Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, Die Krupps and DAF, Spetsnaz was formed as a reaction against Futurepop and to revive what Nilsson and Stålberg saw as "old school" EBM music.Vorndran, Daniela: [http://www.reflectionsofdarkness.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=848&Itemid=49 Spetsnaz], Reflections of Darkness: A Dark Music webzine, March 6, 2006. The band name was taken from one of the street gangs in the 1979 film The Warriors.
History
The band's 2004 single "Perfect Body" took the top spot on the German Alternative Charts (DAC) and ranked #18 on the DAC Top Singles of 2005.{{cite web |title=DAC Top 100 Singles 2005 |url=http://charts.trendcharts.de/jahrescharts2005/DAC/index.html |website=Trendcharts oHG |publisher=AMC Alster Musik Consulting GmbH |access-date=20 January 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080423203707/http://charts.trendcharts.de/jahrescharts2005/DAC/index.html |archive-date=23 April 2008 |date=2006 |url-status=dead}} In 2006, the album Totalitär peaked at #3 on the DAC and ranked #26 on that year's DAC Top Albums chart.{{cite web |title=DAC Top 50 Albums 2006 |url=http://charts.trendcharts.de/jahrescharts2006/dac_top50_album/index.html |website=Trendcharts oHG |publisher=AMC Alster Musik Consulting GmbH |access-date=21 January 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080423220632/http://charts.trendcharts.de/jahrescharts2006/dac_top50_album/index.html |archive-date=23 April 2008 |date=2007 |url-status=dead}}
In November 2006, the duo cancelled their then upcoming tour with And One. Side-Line and other members of the alternative music press reported that they had split, citing differences between the two members.[http://www.side-line.com/news_comments.php?id=18760_0_2_0_C Spetsnaz calls it quits and cancels tour with And One], Side-Line, 16 Nov. 2006. However, only a day later, their record company Out of Line posted a news story denying the split.[http://www.outofline.de/content/news.htm Out of Line Music News], 17 Nov. 2006. They have since "reunited" for a gig with DAF.Partei,[http://www.side-line.com/news_comments.php?id=20889_0_2_0_C Spetsnaz reunites for DAF.Partei gig], Side-Line, 19 Feb. 2007. and released "Deadpan" in November 2007.[http://www.side-line.com/news.php?id=P26162 Re-united Spetsnaz offers 'Deadpan' in November], Side-Line, 3 Oct. 2007.
In 2008, Pontus Stålberg formed the side project Turnbull A.C's with Lars Karlsson and released the album Let's Get Pissed!, which sounds very similar to Spetsnaz but with a more raw feel.
