Springfield Capitals

The Springfield Capitals were an independent baseball league team in Springfield, Illinois.{{cite web|url=https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/league.cgi?code=FRON&class=Ind|title=Frontier League League History|publisher=baseball-reference.com|accessdate=2018-04-21}} The Capitals were members of the Frontier League from 1996 to 2001.{{cite web|url=http://www.sj-r.com/news/20180302/jr-blues-skate-on-as-springfields-longest-operating-sports-franchise|title=Jr. Blues skate on as Springfield's longest-operating sports franchise|publisher=sj-r.com|accessdate=2018-04-22}} The Capitals won the Frontier League championship in 1996 and in 1998.

After the 2001 season, the team moved to Rockford, Illinois, and became the Rockford Riverhawks.

The Ballpark

Springfield Capitals (1963–1977)

The original Springfield Capitals baseball team played in Springfield from 1963 to 1977 in the Central Illinois Collegiate League.{{cite web|url=http://www.ciclbaseball.com/index.php?view=about&show=teams|title=CICL Year-By-Year League Membership|publisher=ciclbaseball.com|accessdate=2018-04-21}} The team was disbanded when the New Orleans Pelicans relocated to Springfield to play as the Springfield Redbirds a Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.
