Sprotbrough Flash is a nature reserve south of Sprotbrough near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, on the north bank of the River Don. History
Two hundred and eighty million years ago, during the Permian period, dolomite (magnesium limestone) formed here. This has been
mined since the mid-19th century.{{Cite web|url=https://www.statista.com/statistics/374350/limestone-and-dolomite-mining-sites-in-the-united-kingdom-uk-by-region/|title=Limestone/dolomite mining sites by region UK 2014 {{!}} Statistics|website=Statista|language=en|access-date=21 April 2017}}{{Cite web|url=http://sytimescapes.org.uk/zones/doncaster/D17|title=Extractive Zone {{!}} South Yorkshire Historic Environment Characterisation|website=sytimescapes.org.uk|access-date=21 April 2017}} Mining has since stopped and wildlife has returned to this area. The original quarry can still be seen opposite the River Don, adjacent to the Sprotbrough Flash lake.{{cite web | url=https://www.local-explorer.com/activities/sprotbrough-flash/ | title=Sprotbrough Flash | publisher=Local Explorer | work=Local Explorer - Adventure Just Beyond Your Door | accessdate=2 May 2017 | pages=1}}
Worthy of note, the woolly rhinoceros{{Cite web|url=http://rhinos.org/species/extinct-woolly-rhino/|title=Extinct Woolly Rhino|website=International Rhino Foundation|access-date=21 April 2017}} lived in this area in the Pleistocene. Bones from this creature have been discovered here.{{cite web|title=Sprotbrough Flash Nature Reserve Yorkshire Wildlife Trust {{!}} Love Yorkshire, Love Wildlife|url=http://www.ywt.org.uk/reserves/sprotbrough-flash-nature-reserve|website=www.ywt.org.uk|accessdate=21 August 2017}}
The long lake from which the name of the reserve is derived is the result of subsidence caused by the collapse of old coal mines.{{cite web | url = https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/116967 | title = Sprotbrough Flash | author = Nigel Homer | date = 4 February 2006 | publisher = Geograph Britain and Ireland}}
