History
The hospital, which was designed by Joseph Potter using an early corridor layout, opened as the Stafford General Asylum in October 1818.{{cite web|url=https://www.countyasylums.co.uk/st-georges-stafford-staffordshire/|title=St George's Hospital, Stafford|publisher=County Asylums|accessdate=18 April 2019}} New buildings to the rear of the main structure were completed in 1850. A new female block was added in 1879 and a similar male block was added in 1884. The hospital became Stafford Mental Hospital in the 1920s and joined the National Health Service as St George's Hospital in 1948.{{cite web|url=http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hospitalrecords/details.asp?id=495|title=St George's Hospital, Stafford|publisher=National Archives|accessdate=18 April 2019}}
After the introduction of Care in the Community in the early 1980s, the need and desire for huge asylum style hospitals reduced and the main building closed in 1995. It was subsequently converted into apartments as St George's Mansions.{{cite web|url=https://www.shropshire-homes.com/development/stafford-st-georges-mansions/|title=St George's Mansions|publisher=Shropshire Homes|accessdate=18 April 2019}}{{cite web|url=https://www.expressandstar.com/news/2015/04/16/watch-take-a-tour-of-abandoned-stafford-asylum/|title=Take a tour of abandoned Stafford asylum|date=16 April 2015|publisher=Express and Star|accessdate=18 April 2019}}{{cite web|url=https://bdaily.co.uk/articles/2018/07/31/abandoned-hospital-given-luxurious-lease-of-life|title=Abandoned hospital given luxurious lease of life|date=31 July 2018|publisher=BDaily News|accessdate=18 April 2019}} The inpatient psychiatric facility was moved next door into more modern units with individual bedrooms and recreational facilities.{{cite web|url=https://www.nhs.uk/services/hospitals/mapsanddirections/defaultview.aspx?id=2747|title=St George's Hospital|publisher=NHS|access-date=16 February 2022}}
