History
The first record of a church in Trowell is from 801, when a wooden church was built.{{cite web |title=Renewal Project |url=https://www.trowellchurch.com/#renewal |publisher=Trowell Church |accessdate=13 March 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191104175904/https://www.trowellchurch.com/#renewal |archive-date=4 November 2019 |url-status=live }}
The present Early English chancel was built in 1080,{{cite web |title=Trowell St Helen |url=http://southwellchurches.nottingham.ac.uk/trowell/hhistory.php |publisher=Southwell and Nottingham Church History Project |accessdate=13 March 2020}} and the Domesday Book says "Here is a priest and half a church and six acres of meadow." Much of the current church dates from the 13th century, with the tower having been added in 1480. A Victorian restoration was undertaken in 1890 by Charles Hodgson Fowler at a cost of £1,500.
From 2016 a renewal project was supported by public donations to replace the heating system. It reopened in 2018 but further work was planned to improve the power supply and lighting.{{cite news |last1=Jarram |first1=Matt |title=Village church reopens after £180,000 transformation scheme |url=https://www.nottinghampost.com/news/local-news/village-church-reopens-after-180000-1035628 |accessdate=13 March 2020 |work=Nottinghamshire Live |date=10 January 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180119073432/http://www.nottinghampost.com/news/local-news/village-church-reopens-after-180000-1035628 |archive-date=19 January 2018 |url-status=live }}

Architecture
The sandstone building consists of a three-bay nave, two-bay chancel, three-bay north and south aisles and a porch on the south side. The two-stage west tower has a crenelated parapet and is supported by four corner buttresses. The stained glass includes a window by Charles Eamer Kempe. The octagonal font dates from the 15th century.
=Organ=
The organ is by Brindley and Foster. It was installed in 1900 and funded by William Smith, a local miller. A specification of the organ can be found on the National Pipe Organ Register.{{cite web|url=http://npor.org.uk/cgi-bin/Rsearch.cgi?Fn=Rsearch&rec_index=N01252 |title=Nottinghamshire Trowell, St. Helen, Nottingham Road [N01252] |publisher=The National Pipe Organ Register (NPOR) |accessdate=14 March 2020}}
