History

St Stephen's Church dates from 1856. It was designed by the architect brothers Frederick John and Horace Francis, who designed at least 20 other churches around London – only St Stephen's is believed to still be in existence. Many changes have been made to the church over the years, the most notable being the removal of a tall spire. The latter was removed following World War II when it was deemed unsafe.{{cite web| url = http://www.ststephens.london/about-us/history/| url-status = dead| archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20150801050915/http://www.ststephens.london/about-us/history/| archive-date = 2015-08-01| title = Our History}}

The church, both exterior and interior, appears in the 1954 Adelphi feature film The Crowded Day.{{cite web |url=http://www.reelstreets.com/index.php/component/films/?task=view&id=2295&film_ref=crowded_day,_the&start=10 |title=Film: Crowded Day, The |last1=Tunstill |first1=John & Brian |last2=James |first2=Simon |last3=Wilkinson |first3=Phil |last4=Lovejoy |first4=Simon |date=2015 |website=ReelStreets.com |publisher=Reel Streets – Worldwide Film Locations| page=2 |access-date=2015-11-27}}
