Reception
Vincent Canby of The New York Times wrote, "'Stacking' has a lot of pretty Montana scenery and a lot of not-great music on the soundtrack. Yet it has no real drive or personality of its own. It looks like a movie made as a cooperative venture by film students with a fairly fancy budget."{{cite web |url= https://www.nytimes.com/1988/01/15/movies/film-lahti-in-stacking.html|title= Film: Lahti in 'Stacking'|last= Canby|first= Vincent|date= 15 January 1988|website= The New York Times|publisher= |access-date= 3 September 2022|quote=}} Michael Wilmington of the Los Angeles Times wrote that "At the end, Anna Mae’s progression has a foreordained feel; not really privy to a struggle or a triumph. Yet it’s a decent film with decent intentions and values. Nowadays, that can sometimes be recommendation enough."{{cite web |url= https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1987-10-09-ca-8567-story.html|title= MOVIE REVIEW : ‘STACKING’ ADMIRABLE IF NOT FULLY SUCCESSFUL|last= Wilmington|first= Michael|date= 9 October 1987|website= Los Angeles Times|publisher= |access-date= 3 September 2022|quote=}} Joe Baltake rated the film 2 stars out of 5, calling it "a case of a movie getting longer with each cut."{{cite web |url= https://cdnc.ucr.edu/?a=d&d=SBS19871216.1.69&e=-------en--20--41--txt-txIN--------1|title= Script is 'Stacked' against fine actors|last= Baltake|first= Joe|date= 16 December 1987|website= The San Bernardino Sun|publisher= |access-date= 3 September 2022|quote=}}
