The village is located at the southern end of the Fosen peninsula in a wide, flat valley along the north side of the Trondheimsfjord. The village of Rørvika lies about {{convert|8|km}} to the east, and that is where the Flakk–Rørvik Ferry links the area with the city of Trondheim to the southeast. The municipal centre of Årnset lies about {{convert|12|km}} to the northwest.

The village was the administrative centre of the old Stadsbygd Municipality that existed until 1964.
