Critical reception

Christopher A. Daniel of Albumism said "Stand By My Woman" is "one of the album's more remorseful moments, allowing Kravitz to be vulnerable over gospel-inspired pianos and organs."{{cite web |last1=Daniel |first1=Christoper A. |title=Lenny Kravitz's 'Mama Said' Turns 30 {{!}} Anniversary Retrospective |url=https://www.albumism.com/features/tribute-celebrating-30-years-of-lenny-kravitz-mama-said |publisher=Albumism |access-date=July 20, 2021 |date=March 30, 2021}} Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune wrote, "As demonstrated on "All I Ever Wanted" and "Stand by My Woman", Kravitz is particularly fond of John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band phase, in which Phil Spector's echo-laden production inflated the sparest instrumentation-simple snare beats, bell-like piano chords-around gut-wrenching vocals."{{cite web |last1=Kot |first1=Greg |title=Lenny Kravitz: Mama Said (Virgin) (STAR)(STAR)1/2 Rather than... |url=https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1991-04-04-9101300944-story.html |website=Chicago Tribune |access-date=July 16, 2021 |date=April 4, 1991 |author-link=Greg Kot}} Elysa Gardner of Rolling Stone stated, "Prince – a musician whose penchant for producing and playing various instruments Kravitz shares and a singer whose whisper-to-a-scream vocal style he adopts for urgent numbers like "Stand by My Woman".{{cite magazine |last1=Gardner |first1=Elysa |title=Lenny Kravitz: Mama Said : Music Reviews : Rolling Stone |url=http://www.rollingstone.com/artists/lennykravitz/albums/album/260925/review/5944975/mama_said |magazine=Rolling Stone |access-date=July 16, 2021 |date=April 18, 1991|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071104043057/http://www.rollingstone.com/artists/lennykravitz/albums/album/260925/review/5944975/mama_said |archive-date=2007-11-04 }} Caroline Sullivan from Smash Hits deemed it "a slow, serious one." She added, "This is all brooding and emotional and you can just see Len furrowing his brow as he sings. It's not as immediately catchy as the last one, but repeated listenings make you feel like you're doing something educational and mind-improving. Sort of."{{cite magazine|url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/57779449@N02/46195184884/in/album-72157676039885887/|first=Caroline|last=Sullivan|title=Reviews: Singles|magazine=Smash Hits|date=September 4, 1991|page=43|accessdate=August 23, 2021}}
