The name refers to the iconic Staten Island Ferry, which connects the borough to Manhattan across the Harbor, and to the red-tailed (Buteo jamaicensis) and Cooper's hawks (Accipiter cooperii) native to Staten Island.{{cite web | title=Introducing Your Ferryhawks!! | work=Staten Island Entertainment | url=https://ferryhawks.com/news/2021/11/17/Your_FerryHawks_2.aspx | access-date=November 18, 2021 |date=November 17, 2021}}
