Stephen Herrero is a Canadian professor emeritus of ecology at the University of Calgary. He is the author of Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance, which has been described as "authoritative" and "required reading" on the topic.{{cite web|last=Bergman|first=Brian|title=Born to Be High and Wild|url=http://www.macleans.ca/article.jsp?content=20030623_61348_61348|work=Maclean's|access-date=5 January 2011|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110807100152/http://www.macleans.ca/article.jsp?content=20030623_61348_61348|archive-date=7 August 2011}}{{cite web|last=Fraser|first=Caroline|title=You Are in Bear Country|url=http://outsideonline.com/outside/magazine/200103/200103disp1.html|work=Outside|access-date=5 January 2011|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://archive.today/20130131005807/http://outsideonline.com/outside/magazine/200103/200103disp1.html|archive-date=31 January 2013}}

Herrero was born in San Francisco, and earned his Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley in animal behaviour and ecology. He moved to Canada after becoming disillusioned with overdevelopment in the U.S., and the Vietnam War.

As a professor at the University of Calgary, Herrero's research on bear attacks has been highly influential; it helped develop new policies in bear safety and shifted focus to bear conservation. He is described as a leading authority on bear attacks and safety, produces bear safety videos, and testifies in legal proceedings involving bear attacks.{{cite news|last=Slade|first=Darryl|title=Bear expert defends Parks Canada's actions before Lake Louise grizzly attack|url=https://ottawacitizen.com/story_print.html?id=3570594|access-date=5 January 2011|newspaper=Ottawa Citizen|date=23 September 2010}}{{Dead link|date=June 2018 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=no }}{{cite web|title=Dr. Steve Herrero|url=https://www.ucalgary.ca/evds/people/faculty/herrero|work=University of Calgary|access-date=5 January 2011}}{{Dead link|date=November 2018 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}{{cite news|url=https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2001-sep-09-me-43719-story.html|title=Neighbors Mourn Victim of Rare Bear Attack|last=Baker|first=Deborah |date=September 9, 2001|access-date=2008-10-20 | work=The Los Angeles Times}}{{cite news|last=Kirkby|first=Bruce|title=Exploring the wild frontier of Jumbo Valley, B.C.|url=https://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/travel/exploring-the-wild-frontier-of-jumbo-valley-bc/article1913269/page4/|access-date=22 February 2011|newspaper=The Globe and Mail|date=18 February 2011}}{{cite news|last=Belluck|first=Pam|title=Study of Black Bears Finds It's Not the Mamas That Should Be Feared the Most|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/11/science/11bears.html|access-date=11 May 2011|newspaper=The New York Times|date=11 May 2011}}
