StreetComplete is an easy to use OpenStreetMap editor that can be used without prior knowledge about OpenStreetMap.{{cite web |url=https://learnosm.org/en/mobile-mapping/streetcomplete/ |title=LearnOSM - StreetComplete | language=en |access-date=2025-05-20}}{{cite web |url=https://github.com/streetcomplete/StreetComplete/blob/master/README.md |title=StreetComplete|website=GitHub | language=en |access-date=2024-10-06}} The app prompts users to answer questions like "What are the opening hours here?" or "Is this still here?" about places and objects in their surrounding. Answering these questions helps to keep the OpenStreetMap database complete and up to date.{{cite web |url=https://opensource.com/article/20/1/streetcomplete-crowdsource-maps |title=How I had a nerdy date night with StreetComplete quests| publisher=opensource.com |last=Weichler |first=Jess|date=January 28, 2020| language=en |access-date=2024-10-08}}{{cite web |url=https://hyperborea.org/reviews/apps/streetcomplete/ |title=StreetComplete - Review|last=Vibber |first=Kelson|date=March 9, 2022| language=en |access-date=2024-10-08}}
Functionality
The app is based on a map view in which places and things with missing or dated OpenStreetMap data are marked. Users can complete this data by answering simple questions (called quests). These quests are designed in such a way that answering them on site is quick and easy and no special expertise or prior knowledge is needed.{{cite web |url=https://amercader.net/blog/casual-openstreetmapping/ |title=Casual OpenStreetMapping |date=13 August 2021 |language=en |access-date=2025-05-20}} In case the answer to a quest does not match one of the selection options, other OpenStreetMap contributors can be asked for help by submitting a note.
StreetComplete focuses on adding further details to already existing objects. As a result of this, users can only modify a subset of the data stored in the OpenStreetMap database. It is, e.g., not possible to change the geometry of buildings or roads. For such changes, users must switch to other editors, such as the iD editor.
Gamification
A unique feature of the app compared to other OpenStreetMap editors is the use of gamification. Users are rewarded points for solved quests and can see their national and global rank.{{cite web |url=https://gadgeteer.co.za/streetcomplete-is-a-gamified-android-app-specifically-for-casual-contributors-to-openstreetmap-editor-for-mapping-in-the-field/ |title=StreetComplete is a gamified Android app specifically for casual contributors to OpenStreetMap Editor for mapping in the field |date=2023-07-23| language=en |access-date=2024-10-08}}
Usage
In the ranking of OpenStreetMap editors, StreetComplete takes second place according to number of users{{cite web |url=https://piebro.github.io/openstreetmap-statistics/#c229 |title=OpenStreetMap Statistics - contributor count per editing software |access-date=2024-10-08}} and fourth place according to number of edits.{{cite web |url=https://piebro.github.io/openstreetmap-statistics/#eb30 |title=OpenStreetMap Statistics - edit count per editing software |access-date=2024-10-08}} This makes the app the highest-placed smartphone app in both categories.
