Strmica ({{IPA|sl|ˈstəɾmitsa|pron}}) is a small settlement in the hills west of Vrhnika in the Inner Carniola region of Slovenia.[http://www.vrhnika.si Vrhnika municipal site]

Name

The name Strmica was originally an oronym referring to Strmica Hill (626 m) southwest of the settlement. It probably originally had the form *Strьma(ja) gora (literally, 'steep mountain') and was later univerbized to Strmica (literally, 'the steep one').{{cite book |last1=Snoj |first1=Marko |title=Etimološki slovar slovenskih zemljepisnih imen |date=2009 |publisher=Modrijan |location=Ljubljana |page=399}}

History

Strmica was administratively separated from Zaplana in 2002 and made an independent settlement. Further adjustments were made to the boundaries of the settlement in 2016.{{cite web |title=Naselje Strmica |url=https://www.stat.si/krajevnaimena/Settlements/Details/5158 |website=Krajevna imena |publisher=Statistični urad Republike Slovenije |access-date=February 24, 2025}}

Strmica is the site of a mass grave from the period immediately after the Second World War. The Strmica Mass Grave ({{langx|sl|Grobišče pod Strmico}}), also known as the Zakovšek Woods below Strmica Mass Grave ({{lang|sl|Grobišče v Zakovškem gozdu pod Strmco}}), is located southwest of the settlement, at an abandoned lime kiln in a sinkhole next to a dirt road on the southeast slope of Strmica Hill. The grave contained the remains of 12 young men from Logatec or Rovte that were murdered on June 21, 1945. The remains were exhumed in 1991 and are now at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Ljubljana.{{cite web |last1=Ferenc |first1=Mitja |title=Grobišče pod Strmico |url=https://www.geopedia.world/#T12_L362_F2534:110_x1585532.9095911484_y5771954.696561986_s15_b2345 |website=Geopedia |publisher=Služba za vojna grobišča, Ministrstvo za delo, družino in socialne zadeve |accessdate=October 14, 2023 |location=Ljubljana |language=sl |date=December 2009}}{{cite book |last1=Golob |first1=Janvit |last2=Vodopivec |first2=Peter |last3=Prunk |first3=Janko |last4=Hribar |first4=Tine |last5=Basta |first5=Milena |title=Žrtve vojne in revolucije: zbornik |date=2005 |publisher=Državni svet Republike Slovenije |location=Ljubljana |isbn=961-6453-08-4 |page=118}}{{cite journal |last1=Ferenc |first1=Mitja |title=Kako do evidence prikritih grobišč v Republiki Sloveniji? |journal=Prispevki za novejšo zgodovino |date=2004 |volume=44 |issue=1 |pages=133, 136}}{{cite journal |last1=Košir |first1=Uroš |last2=Leben Seljak |first2=Petra |title=Arheologija težavne dediščine in izkopavanje množičnega grobišča iz druge svetovne vojne pri Zakrižu |journal=Arheo |date=2019 |volume=36 |page=60}}
