Sturla was the son of Sighvatur Sturluson, brother of saga-writer Snorri Sturluson and lived on a farmstead in Sauðafell. Like his uncle, Sturla became a vassal to King Haakon IV of Norway, and fought to extend his influence in Iceland. Sturla was killed in the Battle of Örlygsstaðir.{{cite web |title=Snorri Sturluson |url=https://lestu.is/safn/Snorri%20Sturluson/index.html |website=lestu |accessdate=10 November 2019 |language=is}}{{cite journal |title=Snorri and His Death: Youth, Violence, and Autobiography in Medieval Iceland |language=en |quote=Sturla Sighvatsson's own tragic death at Orlygsstadir |journal=Scandinavian Studies |volume=53 |issue=3 |id={{ProQuest|215679913}} }} {{subscription required}}
