Details
Many species are microaerophillic, and are thus found in soil, groundwater, the deep sea, marine surface sediments, tube worm guts, and polluted environments.{{Citation |last=Goris |first=Tobias |title=The Genus Sulfurospirillum |date=2016 |work=Organohalide-Respiring Bacteria |pages=209–234 |editor-last=Adrian |editor-first=Lorenz |url=https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-662-49875-0_10 |access-date=2024-04-09 |place=Berlin, Heidelberg |publisher=Springer |language=en |doi=10.1007/978-3-662-49875-0_10 |isbn=978-3-662-49875-0 |last2=Diekert |first2=Gabriele |editor2-last=Löffler |editor2-first=Frank E.|url-access=subscription }} Many species can grow on toxic compounds such as arsenate and selenate, and in fact flourish in contaminated sites. The Sulfurospirillum genus contains the only species on the planet that can respire organohalides. No species in the Sulfurospirillum genus have been found to be pathogenic thus far.
