| quote = Influenced by Expressionism and Futurism, Crnjanski postulated already during World War I the principles of avant-garde program, for which he introduced the term Sumatraism in 1920. His concept covered the most important topoi of contemporary avant-garde art: primal force, the conflict between civilization and nature, and the hope for a new beginning. Sumatraism was based on a vision of cosmic harmony.
