The Sun Shine 38 is a French sailboat that was designed by Tony Castro as a cruiser-racer and first built in 1987.{{cite web|url= https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/sun-shine-38-jeanneau|title= Sun Shine 38 (Jeanneau) sailboat |access-date= 19 October 2022|last= McArthur|first= Bruce|work= sailboatdata.com|year= 2022|archive-url= https://archive.today/20221019140157/https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/sun-shine-38-jeanneau|archive-date= 19 October 2022|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://sailboat.guide/jeanneau/sun-shine-38|title= Jeanneau Sun Shine 38|access-date= 19 October 2022|author= Sea Time Tech, LLC|work= sailboat.guide|year= 2022|archive-url= https://archive.today/20221019140159/https://sailboat.guide/jeanneau/sun-shine-38|archive-date= 19 October 2022|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://sailboatdata.com/designer/castro-tony|title= Tony Castro|access-date = 19 October 2022|last= McArthur| first = Bruce |work = sailboatdata.com|year = 2022|archive-url= https://archive.today/20211207025005/https://sailboatdata.com/designer/castro-tony|archive-date= 7 December 2021|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://sailboat.guide/tony-castro|title= Tony Castro|access-date= 19 October 2022|author= Sea Time Tech, LLC|work= sailboat.guide|year= 2022|archive-url= https://archive.today/20221017222349/https://sailboat.guide/tony-castro|archive-date= 17 October 2022|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://www.jeanneau.com/en/boats/sailboat/36-autres-modeles-voile/593-sun-shine-38/|title= Sun Shine 38|access-date= 19 October 2022|author= Jeanneau|author-link= Jeanneau|work= jeanneauamerica.com|archive-url= https://archive.today/20221019202426/https://www.jeanneau.com/en/boats/sailboat/36-autres-modeles-voile/593-sun-shine-38/|archive-date= 19 October 2022|url-status= live}}

The design is a development of the Sun Shine 36 with a longer and sharper transom, giving it a longer waterline length and thus higher hull speed.{{cite web|url= https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/sun-shine-36-jeanneau|title= Sun Shine 36 (Jeanneau) sailboat |access-date= 19 October 2022|last= McArthur|first= Bruce|work= sailboatdata.com|year= 2022|archive-url= https://archive.today/20221018200237/https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/sun-shine-36-jeanneau|archive-date= 18 October 2022|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://sailboat.guide/jeanneau/sun-shine-36|title= Jeanneau Sun Shine 36|access-date= 19 October 2022|author= Sea Time Tech, LLC|work= sailboat.guide|year= 2022|archive-url= https://archive.today/20221018200246/https://sailboat.guide/jeanneau/sun-shine-36|archive-date= 18 October 2022|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://sailingmagazine.net/article-1512-jeanneau-sunshine-38.html|title= Jeanneau Sunshine 38|access-date= 19 October 2022|last= Liscio|first= David|work= Saling Magazine|date= 1 October 2014|archive-url= https://archive.today/20221019192520/https://sailingmagazine.net/article-1512-jeanneau-sunshine-38.html|archive-date= 19 October 2022|url-status= live}}

Production

The design was built by Jeanneau in France, from 1987 to 1989, in both "team" and "owners" versions, but it is now out of production.{{cite web|url = https://sailboatdata.com/builder/jeanneau-fra|title = Jeanneau (FRA)|access-date = 19 October 2022|last= McArthur| first = Bruce |work = sailboatdata.com|year = 2022|archive-url= https://archive.today/20210605143626/https://sailboatdata.com/builder/jeanneau-fra|archive-date= 5 June 2021|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://sailboat.guide/jeanneau|title= Jeanneau|access-date= 19 October 2022|author= Sea Time Tech, LLC|work= sailboat.guide|year= 2022|archive-url= https://archive.today/20220418125800/https://sailboat.guide/jeanneau|archive-date= 18 April 2022|url-status= live}}

Design

The Sun Shine 38 is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass using Aramat K, which is a stratified glass/Kevlar composite material. It has a masthead sloop rig. The hull has a raked stem, a sharply reverse transom, an internally mounted spade-type rudder controlled by a wheel and a fixed fin keel or optional stub keel and retractable centerboard. The fin keel version displaces {{convert|12677|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} and carries {{convert|4850|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} of ballast, while the centerboard-equipped version displaces {{convert|12677|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} and carries {{convert|5776|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} of ballast.

The keel-equipped version of the boat has a draft of {{convert|6.23|ft|m|abbr=on}}, while the centerboard-equipped version has a draft of {{convert|6.89|ft|m|abbr=on}} with the centerboard extended and {{convert|4.08|ft|m|abbr=on}} with it retracted, allowing operation in shallow water.

The boat is fitted with a Japanese Yanmar 3GM30 diesel engine of {{convert|30|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}} for docking and maneuvering. The fuel tank holds {{convert|22|u.s.gal}} and the fresh water tank has a capacity of {{convert|53|u.s.gal}}.

The design has sleeping accommodation for six people, with a double "V"-berth in the bow cabin, an L-shaped settee and a straight settee in the main cabin and an aft cabin with a double berth on the port side. The galley is located on the port side just forward of the companionway ladder. The galley is U-shaped and is equipped with a two-burner stove, ice box and a double sink. A navigation station is opposite the galley, on the starboard side. The head is located just aft of the companionway on the starboard side. There is also a single sink located just aft of the bow cabin on the port side and inside the aft cabin.

For sailing downwind the design may be equipped with a symmetrical spinnaker.

The design has a hull speed of {{convert|7.63|kn|km/h|abbr=on}}.

Operational history

In a 2014 used boat review David Liscio wrote, "with a fast hull and strong rig, the lightweight Sunshine 38 is capable of efficiently capturing a gentle breeze or taking on a gusty blow. Just as Castro planned, it's the perfect combination of speed and comfort."
