History
The department store was built by the Penang Development Corporation (PDC), the state-owned developer of the Bayan Baru township.{{Cite book|title=Pilot Studies for a New Penang|last=Ooi|first=Kee Beng|publisher=Institute of Southeast Asian Studies|year=2010|isbn=9789814279697|location=Singapore}} Completed in 1993, Sunshine Square is one of the flagship stores of the local retail chain Suiwah Corporation, the other being Sunshine Central at Farlim.{{Cite web |title=About Us – Sunshine Central Penang |url=https://www.sunshinecentral.my/about-us/ |access-date=2024-10-12 |language=en-US}} The shopping centre originally contained a cineplex and a bowling alley, although these have since been converted into function halls for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE).
