The area of the AONB was largely the same as the portion of the National Park within East and West Sussex, containing the South Downs as well as part of The Weald.{{cite web|url=http://www.aonb.org.uk/__80256cd200319c8e.nsf/PublishedContent/9b1519067d2b24c180256ce60075abbf!OpenDocument&AutoFramed |title=Sussex Downs AONB|publisher=www.aonb.org.uk}}
In the latter years of the AONB, the management of the two AONBs of Sussex Downs and East Hampshire was combined under the South Downs Joint Committee, taking responsibility for conservation within the two areas in anticipation of the National Park.{{cite web |url=http://www.southdownsonline.org/ |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20060812025125/http://www.southdownsonline.org/ |url-status=dead |archive-date=2006-08-12 |title=South Downs Online }}
