The Swan 43 is a Finnish sailboat that was designed by Olin Stephens of Sparkman & Stephens as an Royal Ocean Racing Club rule cruiser-racer and first built in 1967. The boat is Sparkman & Stephens' design #1973.{{cite web|url= https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/swan-43-ss/|title= Swan 43 sailboat |access-date= 10 April 2023|last= McArthur|first= Bruce|work= sailboatdata.com|year= 2023|archive-url= https://archive.today/20230410144131/https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/swan-43-ss/|archive-date= 10 April 2023|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://sailboat.guide/nautor/swan-43-ss|title= Swan 43|access-date= 10 April 2023|author= Sea Time Tech, LLC|work= sailboat.guide|year= 2023|archive-url= https://archive.today/20230410144152/https://sailboat.guide/nautor/swan-43-ss|archive-date= 10 April 2023|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://sailboatdata.com/designer/sparkman-stephens|title= Sparkman & Stephens|access-date = 10 April 2023|last= McArthur| first = Bruce |work = sailboatdata.com|year = 2023|archive-url= https://archive.today/20200810200933/https://sailboatdata.com/designer/sparkman-stephens|archive-date= 10 August 2020|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://sailboat.guide/sparkman-stephens|title= Sparkman & Stephens|access-date= 10 April 2023|author= Sea Time Tech, LLC|work= sailboat.guide|year= 2023|archive-url= https://archive.today/20220621155228/https://sailboat.guide/sparkman-stephens|archive-date= 21 June 2022|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://www.yachtingworld.com/extraordinary-boats/swan-43-restoration-50-year-old-sparkman-stephens-yacht-runn-94273|title= Swan 43: the restoration of 50-year-old Sparkman & Stephens yacht Runn|access-date= 10 April 2023|last= Hare|first= Pip|author-link= Pip Hare|work= Yachting Monthly|date= 10 October 2016|archive-url= https://archive.today/20230410144451/https://www.yachtingworld.com/extraordinary-boats/swan-43-restoration-50-year-old-sparkman-stephens-yacht-runn-94273|archive-date= 10 April 2023|url-status= live}}

The design was originally marketed by the manufacturer as the Swan 43, but is now usually referred to as the Swan 43 S&S to differentiate it from the unrelated 1985 Swan 43 Holland design. It was also sold in the United States as the Palmer Johnson 43.

Production

The design was built by Oy Nautor AB in Finland, from 1967 to 1982 and was the second boat built by the company. A total of 67 boats were completed over its 25-year production run, an average of 2.68 boats per year, but it is now out of production.{{cite web|url = https://sailboatdata.com/builder/nautor-swan-sailboats|title = Nautor (Swan sailboats)|access-date = 10 April 2023|last= McArthur| first = Bruce |work = sailboatdata.com|year = 2023|archive-url= https://archive.today/20220407233954/https://sailboatdata.com/builder/nautor-swan-sailboats|archive-date= 7 April 2022|url-status= live}}{{cite web|url= https://sailboat.guide/nautor|title= Nautor (Swan sailboats)|access-date= 10 April 2023|author= Sea Time Tech, LLC|work= sailboat.guide|year= 2023|archive-url= https://archive.today/20230406230707/https://sailboat.guide/nautor|archive-date= 6 April 2023|url-status= live}}

The Swan 43 is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of glassfibre, with wood trim. It has a masthead sloop rig; a raked stem, a raised counter, reverse transom; a skeg-mounted rudder controlled by a wheel and a fixed, swept fin keel. It displaces {{convert|19850|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} and carries {{convert|10400|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} of lead ballast. The boat was delivered with a keel-mounted trim tab.

The boat has a draft of {{convert|7.16|ft|m|abbr=on}} with the standard keel. A short mast was a factory option with a mast about {{convert|1|ft|m|2|abbr=on}} lower than standard.

The boat is fitted with a Swedish Volvo Penta MD2B diesel engine of {{convert|25|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}} for docking and manoeuvring. The fuel tank holds {{convert|40|u.s.gal}} and the fresh water tank has a capacity of {{convert|50|u.s.gal}}.

The design has sleeping accommodation for eight people, with a double "V"-berth in the bow cabin, two straight settee berths and two pilot berths in the main cabin and an aft cabin, two single berths. The galley is located on the starboard side just forward of the companionway ladder. The galley is L-shaped and is equipped with a three-burner stove, an ice box and a sink. A navigation station is opposite the galley, on the port side. The head is located just aft of the bow cabin on the port side.

For sailing downwind the design may be equipped with a symmetrical spinnaker or an asymmetrical spinnaker.

The design has a hull speed of {{convert|7.46|kn|km/h|abbr=on}} and a PHRF handicap of 96 to 114.{{cite web|url= https://www.ussailing.org/competition/offshore/phrf/phrf-handicaps/|title= PHRF Handicaps|access-date= 10 April 2023|author= US Sailing|author-link= US Sailing|work= ussailing.org|year= 2023}}

Operational history

In a 2016 article on a Swan 43 restoration project for Yachting Monthly, Pip Hare wrote, "the Swan 43 was only the second Olin Stephens design to be produced at the Nautor's Swan yard, but its overhanging ends, short coachroof, low freeboard, sheer and tumblehome established the classic Swan lines."
