Sydney Loren Bennett (born April 23, 1992),[http://sibatmedia.wordpress.com/2011/03/01/the-odd-future-wolf-gang-bible/ The Odd Future Wolfgang Bible]. Sibat Media. March 1, 2012. known professionally as Syd (formerly Syd tha Kyd), is an American singer and songwriter. She initially gained recognition as a member of the alternative hip hop collective Odd Future, and went on to co-found the band The Internet in 2011. In 2017, Bennett released her debut solo album Fin, followed by the EP Always Never Home. She released her second album, Broken Hearts Club, in 2022.

Early life

Growing up in a musical family influenced Bennett's interest in music. Her mother once aspired to be a DJ and her uncle is Mikey Bennett, an internationally popular reggae producer and studio owner from Jamaica.{{Cite news|url=http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20101210/ent/ent2.html|title=Mikey Bennett 'Pencils Out' Songwriting Career|last=Cooke|first=Mel|date=December 10, 2010|work=The Gleaner|access-date=October 2, 2020}} As she explained, "I began wishing I could take credit for some of my favorite songs. That was when I started to make my own – I only began singing on my own songs when I really started writing."{{cite web|first=Alex|last=Kazemi| url=http://www.thesupersuper.com/featured/syd-tha-kid-interview/|title=MUSIC: SYD THA KID|publisher=SuperSuper!|access-date=September 25, 2012}} When Bennett was 14, she built a small music studio in her home and worked on sound engineering before getting into production. Her brother is Travis "Taco" Bennett.

For the first half of her high school years, Syd attended Palisades Charter High School.{{cite web|last=Thomas|first=Zanyra|url=http://massappeal.com/odd-futures-syd-the-kyd-talks-music-identity-and-the-internet-11146/|title=Odd Future's Syd the Kyd Talks Music, Identity and The Internet|publisher=Massappeal.com|date=August 7, 2012|access-date=September 26, 2012|page=1|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120922065011/http://massappeal.com/odd-futures-syd-the-kyd-talks-music-identity-and-the-internet-11146/|archive-date=September 22, 2012}} She felt left out and had few friends at Palisades and moved to the Hamilton Music Academy, which she considered a more open-minded school.

Musical career

Syd began making music while she was still living with her parents.{{cite web|last=Rathe|first=Adam|url=http://www.out.com/entertainment/music/2012/02/13/syd-kyd-could-be-hip-hops-next-lesbian-icon|title=Syd the Kyd Could Be Hip-Hop's Next Lesbian Icon|publisher=Out Magazine|date=February 13, 2012|access-date=September 30, 2012}} Syd's stage name was given to her by her older brother, Ty, as a kid. After growing out of it, she reclaimed the name when she joined Odd Future.{{cite web|url=http://www.interviewmagazine.com/music/syd-the-kyd|title=Syd the Kyd| date=October 23, 2011 |publisher=Interview Magazine|access-date=September 25, 2012}} Most of the group's original songs were recorded in Syd's house, also known as "The Trap". Syd acted as a DJ and producer for Odd Future. She was the only female member during the group's active years and openly identified as gay, which often put her at odds with the group’s notoriously homophobic and misogynistic lyrics. In 2011, Syd co-founded The Internet, with their debut album, Purple Naked Ladies, releasing the same year.{{cite news |last1=Joshi |first1=Tara |title=The Internet's Syd: 'I'm the only person like me that I know |url=https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/apr/13/syd-the-internet-odd-future-interview-hive-mind#:~:text=That's%20how%20I%20met%20Odd,formed%20the%20Internet%20with%20Martians. |access-date=13 November 2024 |work=The Guardian |date=13 April 2019}} In 2014, Syd opened for Eminem at Wembley Stadium as part of the Odd Future collective.{{cite news |last1=Cooper |first1=Leonie |title=Odd Future to support Eminem at Wembley Stadium |url=https://www.nme.com/news/music/odd-future-16-1240704#:~:text=Odd%20Future%20are%20set%20to,at%20the%20massive%20London%20venue. |access-date=April 15, 2022 |publisher=NME |date=May 16, 2014}}
