Synthese ({{IPAc-en|s|ɪ|n|ˈ|t|eɪ|z|ə}}) is a monthly peer-reviewed academic journal covering the epistemology, methodology, and philosophy of science, and related issues.{{cite web |title=Synthese |url=https://www.springer.com/journal/11229 |website=Homepage |access-date=2020-11-08}} The name Synthese (from the Dutch for synthesis) finds its origin in the intentions of its founding editors: making explicit the supposed internal coherence between the different, highly specialised scientific disciplines.{{cite journal |title=Inleiding |journal=Synthese |date=December 1936 |volume=1 |issue=1 |pages=1–6 |doi=10.1007/BF01272768}}

Jaakko Hintikka was editor-in-chief from 1965 to 2002.{{cite journal |last=Sher |first=Gila |date=August 2015 |title=In memoriam: Jaakko Hintikka |journal=Synthese |volume=192 |issue=8 |pages=2337–2338 |doi=10.1007/s11229-015-0882-2|doi-access=free}} The current editors-in-chief are Otávio Bueno (University of Miami), Wiebe van der Hoek (University of Liverpool), and Kristie Miller (University of Sydney).{{cite web |title=Editors |url=https://www.springer.com/journal/11229/editors |website=Synthese |access-date=2020-11-08}}

Editorial decision controversies

In 2011, the journal became involved in a controversy over intelligent design. The printed version of the special issue Evolution and Its Rivals,{{cite journal |last1=Branch |first1=Glenn |last2=Fetzer |first2=James H. |title=Evolution and Its Rivals |journal=Synthese |volume=178 |issue=2 |date=January 2011 |url=https://link.springer.com/journal/11229/178/2/page/1 |access-date=28 January 2016}} which appeared two years after the online version, was supplied with a disclaimer from the then editors of the journal that "appeared to undermine [the authors] and the guest editors".{{cite news |last=Oppenheimer |first=Mark |title=Debate Over Intelligent Design Ensnares a Journal |newspaper=New York Times |date=13 May 2011 |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/14/us/14beliefs.html |access-date=28 January 2016}}

The journal engendered controversy again in 2016, when an article was called a "homophobic and sexist rant".{{cite journal |last1=Billingham |first1=Paul |last2=Parr |first2=Tom |date=December 2020 |title=Enforcing social norms: the morality of public shaming |journal=European Journal of Philosophy |volume=28 |issue=4 |pages=997–1016 |doi=10.1111/ejop.12543 |hdl=10230/49122 |s2cid=218803630 |hdl-access=free}}

"Due to an unfortunate human error", one of the articles accepted for publication in the special issue Logic and Relativity Theory{{cite journal |last=Székely |first=Gergely |title=Logic and Relativity Theory |journal=Synthese |volume=192 |issue=7 |pages=1937–1938 |date=July 2015 |doi=10.1007/s11229-014-0622-z |doi-access=free }} was not sent by the guest editor to the editors of the journal for approval as the then current policies had required. Upon the discovery of this discrepancy, the editors of the journal imposed a moratorium on new special issues for approximately two-three months pending review of the policies.{{cite web |last=W. |first=Justin |title=Statement from Synthese Editors/Moratorium on Special Issues |website=Daily Nous |date=27 January 2016 |url=https://dailynous.com/2016/01/27/statement-from-synthese-editors-moratorium-on-special-issues/ |access-date=30 January 2016}}
